The Federal Government's review into Australia's electricity grid underlines its commitment to improve the reliability of Australia's electricity markets.

The Government says its review — to be released in February — will find that some markets are more reliable than others, particularly when considering the number of customers that have signed up for solar power and other forms of distributed generation.

A recent report from the Australian National University released earlier this week suggested the national electricity market is no longer as reliable as it once was.

The review will focus on three areas — the network, costs and benefits of installing the grid.

What is the Australian Electric Reliability Corporation?

The Electricity Network (ENR) project is a five-year study to estimate which national and regional electricity markets are most reliable.

The report comes with recommendations about making changes that will improve the reliability of the power market.

To date, more than $15 billion has been spent on upgrades to the network, including upgrades to supply and demand management systems, the rollout of high frequency electricity generators.

It will be followed by a review into the benefits of installing rooftop solar systems and the cost of installing network-assisted distributed generation (NAS), or distributed generation systems that generate electricity on demand instead of generation.

The project was conceived with an eye to improving reliability and stability in the national power market, but the review will be examining how they have been and will be in the future.

The current network is an average of 22 days behind schedule, says the report, which makes recommendations on improving the reliability of the system and ensuring stability, including improving the speed of distribution and reducing the need for large-scale maintenance.

"The analysis will explore whether the network's strengths are currently present and are still sufficiently valuable, such as its ability to deliver high demand and lower costs, its capacity to provide grid access, and the potential for future improvements," it said.
